The Singing Activist Investor (yes, really).
A few weeks ago Eric Rosenfeld, founder of activist fund Crescendo Partners, asked me for my mailing address. Since we talk on the phone and correspond over email, I wondered what he had in mind.
Today I arrived home to find his debut CD.
Eric’s friends and colleagues know he can belt it out. He sometimes concludes a really dull conference session with a funny song about activist investing. I’ve been fortunate enough to enjoy this.
Well, now he recorded an entire album of parody songs about corporate waste, deceit, sloth, and silliness. Seriously. He has enough material for sixteen of these.
He wrote the lyrics himself, of course, only a portfolio manager could do this. He evidently hired a studio band, rented studio space, commissioned album art (above), and pressed CDs. You can listen to and download the tracks at the album website (password: Activist2015).
Set to show tunes, songs like “I Don’t Know How to Fire Him” and “CEO, Superstar” capture perfectly and succinctly the intense personal heartbreak, frustration, and sorrow of activist investing.
(Alright, maybe it’s not that emotional.)
Actually, they’d be all too funny if they weren’t so true.
Thanks, Eric, for adding some sharp levity to our arcane little corner of the investing world.
